What if the library doesn't have the book or article I want?

REQUESTING BOOKS AND ARTICLES

To get the resource you need as quickly as possible, follow the request procedure below.

Start by using the Library Search box to search by the title of the item you hope to find. If we own the book or subscribe to the journal, you should see access information there.

If we do not have the title you want:

  1. Sign in to Library Search with your SMC user name and then, at the top of your search results, click "Didn't find what you were looking for? Search using Interlibrary Loan."

  2. If available at one of our partner institutions, you'll see the title. Click "Get it for me from other libraries." (If you don't see it, click "Still didn't find what you need? Submit an Interlibrary Loan request at the top of the screen.)

  3. If you aren't already signed in, click "sign in" to sign in with your SMC login.

  4. If given the choice, choose whether you want the entire book (choose "get a physical item" on the left) or just a chapter (choose "get a digital article or chapter" on the right).

  5. Click send, and you're done!

RECEIVING ITEMS

Articles and book chapters will typically be emailed to you within 1–2 business days.

Full books and videos cannot be digitized and will need to be delivered to campus by courier service or US postal mail. This can take 4–10 business days depending on the location of the lending institution. When you request the item, you'll see an estimated delivery time.

You can check on the status of your request in your library account.
